WKN GmbH puts Heidmoor wind farm into operation and feeds green electricity into the grid

  • Six wind turbines with a total rated output of 36 MW connected to the grid
  • Wind farm can supply around 21,500 three-person households with green electricity every year

Heidmoor/Nützen, 23 July 2024 The Heidmoor wind farm planned by WKN GmbH in Husum on the territory of the municipalities of Heidmoor and Nützen has been put into operation. The six wind turbines are located on agricultural land south-east of the municipality of Heidmoor and west of the town of Kaltenkirchen.

This wind farm is not the ‘Heidmoor 2’ project of Hamburg Flughafen GmbH with the same name. Both wind farms were planned independently of each other.

Three of the six Vestas turbines erected are of type V162, the other three are of type V150, each with a rated output of 6 MW. With a total rated output of 36 MW, the Heidmoor wind farm covers the annual electricity requirements of around 21,500 three-person households.

WKN GmbH had already begun realising the wind farm in May 2023, but was only able to start erecting the turbines in the winter of 2023/2024 due to external factors. These included the significant delay in obtaining transport authorisation for the components and weather-related downtime. At times during the construction phase, twice as much precipitation fell as the long-term average. The project manager responsible for the construction phase of the wind farm, Arne Christiansen, drew a very positive conclusion despite all the adversities: ‘I would like to thank all the contractors, surveyors, landowners and tenants as well as the representatives of the approval authorities for their consistently goal-oriented and constructive cooperation during the realisation of the wind farm.

Over the next few weeks, the land used during the construction phase will be reworked to make it available for agricultural use again.

WKN is making use of Section 6 of the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) 2023 for the financial participation of the neighbouring municipalities in the Heidmoor wind farm. This allows project developers to give communities within a 2.5 kilometre radius of the centre of a wind turbine tower a financial stake in its operation. In accordance with this regulation, WKN pays a voluntary amount of 0.2 cents per kilowatt hour generated to the municipalities of Alveslohe, Heede, Heidmoor, Langeln, Lentföhrden, Lutzhorn, Nützen, the town of Barmstedt and the town of Kaltenkirchen.

As part of environmental protection and nature conservation, various measures were implemented to compensate for interventions in the natural environment. These include the consideration of sensitive habitats, protective measures for endangered animal and plant species as well as ecological compensation measures such as the conversion of arable land into habitats for various species. Measures to reduce emissions, such as compliance with noise and shadow impact guidelines and the installation of demand-controlled night-time signage, are also described in order to minimise the impact on the environment.
